Based in Rhode Island, Darcy is building a notary business rooted in organization, service, and stepping outside of her comfort zone—and her journey has already inspired so many inside the TNBB community.

Passion Meets Purpose: A New Chapter with Ocean Notary
Darcy Uustal’s journey is one of courage, intention, and steady growth. Balancing her full-time career while building her notary business, she’s proving that with consistency, community, and a clear vision, you can turn your side hustle into something special.
Her notary journey began back in 2015 when she first received her commission while working in HR. Though that initial commission expired in 2019, she found the courage to renew it—and launch her own business—thanks to her biggest supporter: her husband.
“I’ve been a full-time recruiter for over 10 years, and I launched Ocean Notary to offer general mobile notary services to all of Rhode Island. Soon, I’ll be expanding into Remote Online Notarization and apostille services. I also provide resume writing under the same business name.”
Inspired by the nickname of her home state, the Ocean State, Darcy named her business Ocean Notary—a nod to her roots and the reach of her mobile services.
Taking the Leap and Getting Started
Darcy has made impressive progress in a short time. She officially registered her LLC, created a professional logo, and secured a business phone number. She’s already marketing her services on Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn, and is awaiting her Google Business Profile to go live.
“I’m so excited that my website is in the works—shout out to Sierra for sharing Sydni Craig-Hart’s offer in TNBB! That’s how I found my website designer.”
But like many new entrepreneurs, Darcy admits that just getting started was the hardest part.
“It’s easy to let the anxiety of the unknown take over, but I keep reminding myself: one step at a time.”
Celebrating First Clients and Small Wins
Darcy wasted no time in getting visible—and it paid off. She landed her first signing after a local connection saw one of her posts online.
“I did my first signing for someone local who saw one of my Facebook posts and needed a notary on the weekend.”
Since then, she’s helped two people with resume writing as well, thanks to word-of-mouth and her early social media efforts.
“Even while learning, I think it’s important to start promoting yourself. Once my website and business cards are ready, I’ll be doing more in-person marketing too.”
Building with Intention
Darcy is currently focused on laying the foundation for long-term growth. Her goal for this year?
“If I can make an extra $5K–$10K this year, I’ll be thrilled. For now, Ocean Notary is supplemental income, but I’d love to grow it into something more steady.”
Looking ahead, she’s excited to continue balancing her flexible full-time job while seeing where her notary business can take her.
Lessons in Growth and Courage
Starting a business has stretched Darcy in new ways—but she’s embracing every part of the process.
“I’ve learned that it’s okay to step outside your comfort zone. I’m nervous about the unknown, but I know I’m capable of making Ocean Notary a success—and that keeps me going.”
One of the habits that’s helped her stay grounded?
“I’m a big to-do list person. Staying organized keeps me focused.”

“I’ve been attending a lot of TNBB trainings after work, and he’s been holding down the fort at home. I’m so grateful for him.”

“It’s been so rewarding to be part of this community. Everyone is so welcoming and helpful. It’s comforting to have a space to share wins, ask questions, and grow together. We’re all at different stages, but the support is always there.”
Advice for Aspiring Notaries
Darcy’s advice to others who are just getting started?
“You don’t need to have it all figured out—just start. Take one small step at a time and keep learning as you go. Put yourself out there, even if it’s uncomfortable. It’s all part of the journey.”
