How It All Began
Darshell's notary journey started the way many do, with a desire to create an additional source of income. But what she discovered along the way was something far bigger than a side business.
She has been in business for a little over two years now, and her mindset has shifted completely. What began as "just a side business" has become something she wants to grow into a long-term business that serves her community for years to come.
"Once I started learning more about the profession, I realized there were so many opportunities beyond general notarizations!"
Her path has not been without detours. After getting commissioned in 2024, life took her in a different direction and she stepped back to help a friend with their family business. Toward the end of 2025, that chapter came to a close and Darshell made a decision that would change everything, she invested in herself again, rebranded her business as Sign the Line Mobile Notary, and committed to building it with intention.
Building Visibility and Trust
Rebuilding was not without its challenges. What had once been simple became complicated. Her Google Business Profile, which had taken only a short time to set up under her previous business name, became a year-long process before everything was finally approved under the new brand.
But Darshell did not wait. She focused on what she could control.
"Instead of waiting, I focused on what I could control. I stayed active on social media, handed out business cards and flyers, continued networking, and kept showing up consistently."
That persistence paid off. And the experience taught her one of the most valuable lessons of her entrepreneurial journey.
"Building a business isn't about finding one thing that works. It's about being willing to adapt, stay consistent, and keep moving forward even when progress feels slow."
Serving With Compassion
Darshell's ideal clients are busy families and senior citizens, two groups she serves with a particular sense of purpose and care.
"For busy families, I enjoy saving them time by meeting them where it's most convenient, whether that's at home, work, or another agreed-upon location. Life gets hectic, and I like being able to take one less thing off their plate."
Her heart for seniors runs just as deep.
"Many have transportation or mobility challenges, and something as simple as traveling to find a notary can become stressful. Being able to bring the service directly to them and make the process comfortable and straightforward is incredibly rewarding."
At the core of everything Darshell does is a simple but powerful goal, to make notarization easier and more accessible for the people who need it most.
The Power of a Niche
When it comes to the question of niche versus broad market, Darshell has a clear and thoughtful perspective rooted in her own experience.
"I think finding a niche is incredibly important, especially when you're first starting. There is already so much to learn as a new notary that trying to do everything at once can become overwhelming."
For Darshell, the client experience is just as important as the notarization itself.
"I want people to feel comfortable throughout the appointment, know they're in good hands, and leave feeling confident enough to call me again in the future. That kind of trust is built through preparation, experience, and continuing to learn."
Goals and Vision
Darshell's goals are grounded in momentum, growth, and service. This year, her focus has been on building stronger than before.
"One of my biggest goals this year has been to continue building momentum. I wanted to complete more notarizations than I did during my first year in business while continuing to strengthen the foundation of my business."
Looking ahead five years, her vision is one of legacy and community impact.
"My goal is to continue growing into a trusted resource in my community while expanding the services I offer. More than anything, I want to build a business that is known for being dependable, professional, and genuinely helpful to the people I serve.""
Lessons, Motivation and Support
If there is one piece of wisdom Darshell wants every new notary to hear, it is this, take your time. She also wants notaries to know what truly comes with building a business.
“I think a lot of new notaries feel like they have to do everything immediately. It's easy to compare yourself to people who have been in business for years and feel like you're behind. I've learned that it's okay to build at your own pace."
On the hard days, Darshell draws from something she has carried her whole life.
"I've never been much of a quitter. When I set my mind to something, I want to see it through. Succeeding isn't an option; it's the goal, and I'm willing to keep learning and adapting until I get there."
The Notary Blueprint® Community
For Darshell, The Notary Blueprint® Community has been far more than a resource. It has been a constant through every season of her journey. What she values most is the genuine spirit of the people inside TNB.
“Over the past year, it's been more than just a place to ask questions. It's been a community that's encouraged me, challenged me, and reminded me to keep moving forward"
She describes The Notary Blueprint® (TNB) Community as a space that refuses to let her go, even when she had to step back.
"Sierra continued checking in on me and sharing her 'Plays of the Week.' Those simple check-ins and weekly action items helped me stay connected to my goals and reminded me that progress doesn't have to stop just because life gets busy."
One Habit That Moves The Needle
Darshell's most powerful habit is one that costs nothing but pays everything, observation and never-ending learning. She pairs that with a willingness to test, adjust, and evolve.
"I'm part of several notary communities and professional groups, and while I don't always jump into every conversation, I'm always paying attention. I enjoy seeing the questions people ask, reading the different perspectives, and learning from the experiences of others. There's so much knowledge you can gain just by listening."
A Milestone Moment
When Darshell reflects on her most rewarding moments, two stand out. The first was attending the NNA Conference in 2025, a turning point that came at exactly the right time.
“It allowed me to meet so many amazing people, learn from experienced professionals, and see just how many paths there are within this industry. I had just started rebuilding my business, and I came home feeling inspired and more confident about the direction I wanted to take."
Final Thoughts
Darshell left us with a message for every notary who is just starting out and for anyone who has ever questioned whether they were making progress.
“Give yourself grace and don't compare your journey to someone else's. Building a business takes time, and there will be moments when you question yourself or wonder if you're making progress. Keep learning, keep asking questions, and don't be afraid to make mistakes. Some of my greatest lessons came from trial and error."
Darshell Harper is building Sign the Line Mobile Notary with grit, grace, and a heart full of purpose. She is a reminder that the most powerful thing you can do in business, and in life is simply refuse to quit. 💜
